Oma’s German Apple Cake

One of my fondest childhood memories is my German grandmother's Apple Cake - Oma's gedeckter Apfelkuchen. It is my go-to desert recipe, I love making it for family and friends and everybody loves it. Today, in these times where we all need a little comfort, I am happy to share this old family recipe with you.

2 ¼ cup all-purpose flour

½ cup sugar

1 tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. salt

14 tbsp. butter, softened

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla extract

5 large green apples (Granny Smith) peeled and sliced

1 c. powdered sugar

  • Mix all of the dry ingredients together.

  • Add butter and knead into flour.

  • Mix all wet ingredients together and add to dough. Knead until texture is smooth. Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.

  • Slice apples, add 2 tbsp. of sugar and ¼ cup of water and cook over low heat until apples are soft. Drain apples.

  • Preheat convection oven to 375°F.

  • Grease a 9”springform. Roll out half of the dough and place onto bottom of spring form.

  • Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.

  • Lay cooked apple slices on top of baked cake bottom. Roll out remaining dough. Place over apples

  • Bake for another 20 minutes, until golden brown.

  • Mix powdered sugar with approximately 2 tbs. of water to make sugar glaze. Glaze pie as soon as pie is finished baking and let cool.

  • Serve the apple pie with sweet whipped cream or ice cream. Enjoy!

Note: Ideally I use a food processor, in which case I use cold butter and mix flour and butter until I obtain a sand like texture. I then add the wet ingredients and mix until texture is smooth.
